Use the VIN to check for recalls and Carfax, and verify the VIN on the title matches the car's VIN. 2. Confirm the title is clean (not salvage/rebuilt), and the seller's name matches their ID. 3. Inspect the car during the day, start it cold, and definitely test drive it on the freeway. 4. Spend $100-150 for a third-party mechanic to do a PPI (pre-purchase inspection); this is the best money you'll spend. 【During the Transaction】 5. Use a cashier's check or transfer funds in person; don't carry large amounts of cash. 6. Both parties fill out the back of the title + Bill of Sale, accurately reporting the mileage. 7. The seller must provide a valid smog certificate (within 90 days). 【After the Transaction】 8. Transfer the title at the DMV within 10 days; pay the use tax. 9. Get insurance before driving the car away. 【Red Flags】Rushing to sell / Only accepting cash / Refusing a PPI / Saying they'll provide the title later because it's not in hand - walk away immediately.
